About Sölvanes
Sheepfarming is the main subject of the farm. The sheep count about 100,
and stay during the winter at home on the field or in the sheephouse,
depending on the weather. After the lambing- season is finished (beginning
of June) the sheep are taken out of the fields and spend the summer running
free in the mountain Hamraheiði above the farm.
There are also a few calves, two cows and 15 wild mares on the farm plus two tamed horses.
The two tamed ones are used for the sheepcollection in the autumn as well as the riding tours
of the family during the summer. The milk from the two cows is used at home; for the
family and guests
and the small calves also get their share.
The farm is run by a family. It belongs to the couple Magnús Óskarsson (1947) and Elín Sigurðardóttir (1945), but they
moved to Skagafjörður from Húsavík in 1979 when they bought
the farm. After their studies in Denmark and Britain they both worked in
Húsavík as primaryschool-teachers. Besides the farmwork they have continued
working as teachers.
The family moved in to a new house in 1985. In the next years the old
house was repaired to get a new role; and it has served as a tourist
accommodation since 1990.
